“Instead of being open and flexible to take in NEW information and practices many people just defend the old. I did. I had all the reasons and defenses ready for why I could not, or would not, do or try something. If I didn’t think it would work.

I couldn’t and didn’t see the value in it. I wouldn’t allow it in. I discarded it before trying it, understanding and experiencing it. It could have made a profound difference but I didn’t allow it. My old excuses prevented accepting and learning from new opportunities.

You can’t describe the taste of an orange to someone who has never tasted one. Nor, can you describe the color red to the person who has never seen it. It’s the experience of using the new information that can be life-changing. Knowledge doesn’t change us. It doesn’t.

Applying the knowledge can change us. If one’s not willing to apply it in order to change and get different and better results, then one will remain stuck getting the same results they hope to improve. That person will remain the same blaming others and circumstances.

Instead of taking responsibility and becoming aware of their resistance to something new. Most of us are like this. We really hate to leave our comfort zone. That is why it is called a comfort zone. It’s comfortable and we’ll stay even if it causes pain. It’s familiar.

The unknown bothers us BUT it is the experience of tasting the orange that makes the difference. Information doesn’t transform us. Knowing what to do and not doing it won’t make us successful! Applying what we know IS the difference that makes the difference.

To learn, understand and apply it we first must be open to taking it in. We must not defend ourselves. We must let go of excuses and stop resisting. Instead of defending our ‘old’ ways we’d be better served to allow the new in and give it a try. Practice using it.

Notice what happens, how we change once we get past our initial reluctance and resistance. We may be very surprised. Often, we usually are. So, in order to be ready for the teacher or learning to appear you need to be an open vessel. You need to get to empty.

I claimed to be open but was not. It’s just so easy to self-deceive. Could you practice allowing things in? Yes. Will you? Hmmmm. That is up to you. Practice means doing the correct thing repeatedly. Could you attempt to be more open and willing? Yes. Will you? More next time.  In the meantime, celebrate everything! Rex Sikes
