“The best case is when a student is open, willing and teachable as I’ve discussed. To be ready for something new the cup needs to be emptied so new can fill it. It’s a process of letting go to become open. As we open up more new can be added in. More benefit gained.

The new information can only be life-changing when we’re open to we embrace it and use it. Then knowledge, the lessons, can lead us to new ways of thinking and being BUT knowledge alone doesn’t change us. Only by using the knowledge can we begin to change.

So, it is in the application of the knowledge whereby we learn the lessons. It’s the experience, the attempts, the defeats, the challenges we learn from and benefit from. It is having experience not just more information. Competence arises through repeated trials.

By making adjustments as needed, competence develops from experience. We get feedback from our efforts. Mistakes and obstacles guide and shape us. We gain wisdom. So, knowing is not enough! Competence and wisdom is needed. That takes time!

To be ready to learn and transform seek to be open and available without judgement or analysis. You will analyze at another time but while first learning it is not the time to analyze it. Dive in and immerse yourself in it. Later, drying off you can analyze. Get it?

Don’t interfere with the presentation, the pouring in from the teacher, or your ability to receive. Suspend judgement and analysis and be open, available, willing and teachable. Empty the cup. You can’t fit a square peg into a round hole. This is important.

The new material won’t fit into an old, already filled, container. You don’t put new wine in old wine sacks. You can’t analyze it OR defend what you already know and remain open. That’s not being open. That is perpetuating the old not inviting the new. Let go to get new.

When the mind is full, it’s occupied. It is busy and the Master cannot add any more to it BECAUSE it IS full. Some things take a very short time to learn; minutes at most. But they require an entire lifetime to master. Quick to learn and a lifetime to master is the principle.

Mastery comes by successfully applying the information in multiple circumstances over a duration of time. Correct repetition breeds good habits. In order to get develop mastery we first need to absorb the new material without interference. This is an important point.

It’s similar to listening. We need to recognize when we are listening only to speak and present our view, instead of listening to gain understanding about things we don’t know about. It requires letting go of the need to judge, speak, and inform others our thoughts.

We need to recognize when we are closed to new ideas and unable to accept information. We need to see when we resist and so we can stop resisting. That is the example of the Master. He taught by example. He let the tea overflow to make the point. Otherwise…

He could have wasted words attempting to convince the disciple, potential student, the mind needed to be emptied first. The Master provided an experience for the disciple. The disciple most likely still didn’t get it, went away and analyzed what happened.

Perhaps, the student got it. Perhaps not. Learning to be open and being willing to change can take a time to master. It is so simple it can be difficult to grasp! Stay open, be willing. We may claim we are open. Many times, most times we are not.

I certainly have been closed-minded. Awareness is the key to change. Many times we will fall, but we need to get back up and do again. Frequently, we close the door to change while thinking we have left it open. We need to be able to notice when we shut down and resist so we can open up for new things to be poured in. You and I will get this ONLY WHEN you and I get this. Celebrate everything!” Rex Sikes
