“When it comes to mastering any skill, intellectual, emotional or behavioral you must repeat it correctly, consistently, using spaced repetition for long enough until you wire it in and it becomes an automatic, reliable, non-conscious habit. It’s not overnight!

There are different estimates on how long it takes for a new behavior to become habit. The range is somewhere between 21 to 90 days. 21 days has always meant the least number of days to begin the process of building a habit. It is not the final number or endpoint!

Still, this is great news! Within a relatively short period of time you can learn positive productive habits that can revolutionize your life! You rid yourself of old habits by writing over them. You Change the pathways in the brain to get new different results.

You take a different route to the destination you want instead of going the way you had been going. When you get rid of the habits that hold you back and replace them with positive new ones your life will change for the better. It takes some time, yes, but it is worth it!

So, whenever you become aware of doing it the old way STOP, take a deep breath, interrupt that pattern and decide to engage the new behaviors. Shift away from the old way and toward the new way.  Praise yourself for noticing the opportunity to change.

Stop being critical or hard on yourself. Instead encourage the change. Nurture it along. Pat yourself on the back for becoming aware of what used to be a problem and doing it the new way. AS you notice yourself engaging in the new habit celebrate.

Celebrate everything. A good habit is formed by engaging in the good habit, the correct behavior, repeatedly over the time period. As the new habits take hold you will be amazed and delighted with the progress. As you’d encourage a toddler to walk, encourage yourself.

If you repeat the old behavior PAT yourself on the back for noticing the opportunity to change and encourage yourself to take that pathway the next time. You don’t criticize the toddler for falling down but encourage the toddler to get up and keep going. Get this!
