“‘Confidence builds success and success builds confidence. Confidence is important but how does one build confidence? If the successful person wants to achieve something she goes after it. It never occurs to a successful person that she might not get it. If she wants it she gets it. How do you build this kind of success? Where do you begin? First, you begin right from where you are.

How would you begin to learn to walk a tightrope 60 feet in the air? Would you climb to the top of the ladder and just step out on faith? Most assuredly you would not. Not if you are smart! Trying it without knowing how would most likely bring disaster. The way to learn to walk a tightrope is by putting safety first. You begin with the tightrope lying on the ground!

You walk on the tightrope ON THE GROUND. A tightrope is a large rope. It’s not your everyday variety. You put the rope on the ground and learn to walk along it. Once you can do this you raise the tightrope a few inches off the ground. Then you raise it to a foot, then three feet, six feet and then 10. You never go any higher than you can successfully walk it.

However long it takes to walk from low to high is how long it takes. There’s no need to rush. Your confidence will grow as your competence grows. As you do it and are successful you ought to feel confident. You shouldn’t feel confident about being a tightrope walker until after you are. BUT you should feel confident you can LEARN to and be successful at it.

NOTICE the difference. You aren’t deluded about being a great tightrope walker until you are one. BUT you do know that as you practice it you can become one! This is important. Confidence grows as your competence grows. The only confidence you need to begin is that if you try it and learn to do it correctly you can learn it, improve it and succeed at doing it. Be confident you can learn it.

Before you know it you are walking way up high. You first acquire the skill close to the earth. Once accomplished you go to the next level up. You learn to walk a tightrope in increments. You master the skill at lower heights to build the confidence needed to move to higher heights. You progress incrementally. Once you have succeeded at a particular height you feel confident.

Success breeds confidence and that confidence breeds more success. You feel ready to move on. You know you can do it so you aren’t afraid to try. You have no doubt or fears. You know you will succeed because you have built a track record of successes. NOW apply this thinking to getting your goals and making your dreams come true. Know you can learn to do it and do it step by step.

Set the goal you wish to accomplish small enough you believe you can attain it, but large enough it’s still fun to go after. This is important! Make it small enough that you ABSOLUTELY believe you could do it, without question, you are capable. You expect to succeed. You don’t want to be scared off by it. You want to have it small enough you know you can succeed but not so big you don’t try.

If your goal is to make lots of money and if you’ve never made much, you need to set your sights smaller at first. Work your way up but start with something you know you can achieve. If you’ve never made much money, before you set your sights on millions, choose an amount, that while it’s a stretch, you know you can realistically make it happen. Read that again and embrace it.

It will be a stretch, but you can do it. First aim for an amount you are sure you can make. Then as you make that, increase the amount. Increase again. Why? Because as you win you will create momentum. Keep the momentum alive by incrementally stretching yourself to the next amount. If you do this and hit your target each time you are growing your success muscle.

The more you succeed the easier it gets the next time. The stretch is there but you grow accustomed to stretching. Instead of scaring you off, you think, let me at it. Why/ Because winning and succeeding becomes a habit for you. Step by step you made it happen. Step by step you succeed. Imagine how you’d feel if you doubled your income?

Once you’ve achieved that goal and you enjoy the confidence that comes with it, set a larger goal. Perhaps, you aim at 150K. Once you accomplish this and feel that success, aim for maybe 300 or 500K. Again, stretch a bit more. You put the goal just outside your reach but not so far outside that you doubt you could get it. You must believe you can succeed to succeed!
